Synopsis: the term Near East, refers to the region encompassing Anatolia (the Asian part of modern Turkey), the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus, Israel and the Palestinian territories), Mesopotamia (Iraq) and occasionally Transcaucasia (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan). In political contexts and modern journalistic, this region is usually considered as understood in the Middle East. This map can be used to work the context of the Crusades (centuries XI - XIII).
